Software Engineering Foundations (Months 1-3)

Backend development including:

  • Foundational programming concepts including logic and conditionals, equality and comparisons, statistics and math, classes, arrays, strings, loops, and functions.
  • How to develop object-oriented applications in Java using class diagrams.
  • How to handle exceptions when program flow is disrupted.
  • How to leverage Java Standard Libraries to write objects that hold data and perform a task.
  • How to design and utilize data structures.

Working on the job skills including:

  • How to solve problems like a software engineer.
  • How to write clean code and debug software applications..
  • How to work on an engineering team and track file changes using git.

 

Software Engineering Program
(Months 4-12)

Once you’ve built your programming foundation skills, we’ll dive deeper into software engineering with a focus on backend programming using Java.

Backend development including:

  • How to develop object-oriented applications in Java using abstraction, encapsulation, inheritance, polymorphism, and interfaces.
  • How to design searching and sorting algorithms and gauge their efficiency using Big-O Notation. 
  • How to develop programs using advanced Java concepts including memory management, streams, primitive wrapper classes, and generics, optionals, comparable, and dependency injection. 
  • How to use data structures like linked lists, stacks, queues, trees, graphs, and sets within your Java applications. 
  • How to maximize your program’s efficiency by using threading and concurrency with caching, thread safety, futures, executor services, and synchronization.

Cloud architecture including:

  • How to design and implement cloud applications.
  • How to design and develop application programming interfaces (APIs) to reveal developer data and application functionality.
  • How to store data using Relations Databases (SQL).
  • How to design on-demand applications that allocate computing resources on an as-needed basis.
  • How to use DevOps tools and practices to increase the speed in which software development teams deliver applications including managing computer hardware, deployments, Gradle, web security, metrics, logging, remote debugging, and SSH.
  • How to develop end-to-end solutions deployed on AWS services including DynamoDB, EC2, and Lambda.
  • How to design tables and indexes and execute efficient queries using DynamoDB.

Working as an engineer skills including:

  • How to develop software within an agile environment focusing on the scrum methodology. 
  • Understand the software development lifecycle and the role you’ll play within an engineering organization. 
  • How to apply integration and unit testing within the software development lifecycle. 
  • How to create test cases against software requirements before the software is completely developed.
  • How to pass a technical interview including whiteboard sessions through practice problems. 
  • How to speak about your newly developed backend development knowledge within a job interview.

Do I have to know how to code in order to attend Kenzie?

Absolutely not! We’re looking for self-starters who are curious about technology and like working with diverse groups of people. Our learners are driven problem-solvers who can handle when things get tough and who enjoy being part of a collaborative tech community. Kenzie is open to all applicants with the right attitude and enthusiasm.

Do you offer courses in-person, online, or both?

This course will be 100% online with no fixed class time.

You will have weekly check-ins and access to a dedicated advisor who will help you create a customized learning plan on a schedule that works for you. Your customized learning plan may include weekly check-ins, Zoom tutoring sessions, office hours, and group projects. Am I guaranteed to get a job at Amazon?

Graduates of Kenzie Academy’s Software Engineering program are not guaranteed a job at Amazon. Graduates, however, will be eligible to apply for entry-level software development engineering roles at Amazon without a traditional four-year computer science degree. In addition to Amazon, our talent placement team will also work on connecting you with other enterprise and technology employers. Kenzie currently works with over 250 employers nationally to place our graduates at various technology positions.

What types of jobs will I be qualified for after this course?

You’ll earn two certificates within Kenzie’s 12-month Software Engineering program:

Will I receive a degree when I graduate from Kenzie Academy?

No, this Software Engineering program is currently not a degree program. You will earn a certificate and acquire the necessary skills to apply for an entry-level Software Development Engineer role at Amazon, as well as at many other employers. There is a growing list of employers today that no longer require degrees for developers and other tech adjacent roles. In addition, you will also be eligible to apply your certificate towards a degree program at SNHU as you acquire more skills to grow in your career over time.
